It was end of November, the days were grey on the plateau. Susanna and I decided to go seek some sun during on the nearby mountain le Suchet. We enjoyed the way to arrive up there but the surprise was when we found the yellow full moon during sunset.
A sea of clouds
As a nature lover, being in Switzerland is amazing. I can enjoy wonderful landscapes and mountains are all around you within short distance. But those mountains also form a border around the plateau area that create a big “bowl”. In winter time, often this “bowl” fills with humidity, fog or stratus will form above your head.
Situated between 500m and 1000m a.s.l, this layer can sometimes hide the sun a few days in a row, everything is dark or grey and the only thing you want is get some sun. Some days, going to the next village 50m to 100m higher might be enough to get above the fog. That day we needed to go at least 1000m a.s.l to find the sun and Le Suchet was a good option.
Le Suchet
Le Suchet is a mountain in the Jura culminating at 1588m a.s.l. With that elevation it should just be high enough to find the sun as the top of the clouds were around 1500m a.s.l.
On our way to the top, we enjoyed the winter show, the plants were all covered by frost. The tiny road is passing through the forest. Being in the dense fog, the trees made 50 shades of grey.
We were not sure to find the sun at the top yet.
Along many other summit, you will pass on Le Suchet while hiking on the Jura Crest Trail.
Exiting the forest, I knew we were almost at the top of the Suchet. We could see that the clouds were getting brighter and soon we started to see the blue sky. Once arrived at the edge of the fog, one of the first thing we could see was rays lights passing through branches creating strange hallos.
After stopping to take the ray of sun, we walked towards the summit and discovered a big sea of clouds with the Alps emerging at the horizon. We could finally fill our system with Vitamine D, enjoying the moment, taking pictures of the clouds dancing between trees. Some of the mountains such as the Mont-Blanc or Dents-du-Midi were easy to spot.
The yellow full moon showed up
While walking slowly there, enjoying the show, the time passed and we were still there at sunset. The blue sky started to take pink colours and the sea of clouds took other shades as well.
At that moment, we discovered that the almost full moon was rising at the opposite of the sun. The warm yellow moon was emerging from the pine trees in front of a blue and pink background. It was a marvellous moment to finish the day and we’ll keep this souvenir all our life.
